Most wouldn’t be surprised to hear that around 96% of us are tea addicts. Drinking tea has many health benefits. There are many studies which have proved that taking tea improves health. It is a delectable way of getting enough fluid into human body each day. Research has shown that teas can help protect teeth and heart.
Chaya Peediya was not a pre-planned destination but after hours of tiresome shopping, I wanted to have something to satisfy my hunger. I googled to see the good rating restaurants but unfortunately found it too far away from my location. I had no patience to travel to those spots. Then my eyes locked on the board “Chaya Peediya, a new generation tea shop”. But I thought my hunger would not be fulfilled with a cup of tea. But the caption on the board attracted me so I decided to take a chance. Not only in the name but in its entire ambience, the shop proved to be a reminiscent of old peedias (traditional tea shops in Kerala).
Being the owner and the man behind the idea of Chaya Peediya, Shabin Noushad did hundred percent justice to the shop. Shabin’s love towards tea is the only ground which opens the floor to Chaya Peediya. The interior paintings and even the objects showcased there take us to the golden era of Malayalam cinema. To the right side of the entrance there is a hand cart for making tea which recollects the 90’s of Kerala. The snacks are served in traditional “Bamboo Murom” (traditional bamboo tray), from which the customers can choose.
There are multiple varieties of tea where the tea leaves are imported from various countries. Some of the varieties are ‘rosappoo chai’, ‘mullapoo chai’, ‘ Cadbury chai’, ‘ magic ice chai’ and ‘ dancing tea’. The prices are reasonable and the service is good too.
How to go?
This place is on the main MG road, opposite to Maharajas ground around 50 metres away from the Maharajas metro station.
All the dishes out there have a Thalassery touch especially the dishes like ‘tharikachiyathu’, ‘pothichoru’, ‘irachichoru’, ‘chicken biriyani’, and ‘unnakaya special with ice cream’. A recipe has no soul but you as a cook needs to give it a soul. This is very true of this shop because the special dishes are purely their contribution to the people of Kochi.
